Map Storage Cabinets at University of Arizona Map Library

MAP STORAGE CABINETS PERFECT FOR TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS

The University of Arizona Library in Tucson Arizona has an extensive map collection. In fact Ulrich Planfiles house many of these maps. Before, we featured this library in one of our map storage cabinet brochures from the 1980’s. As shown above the librarians had arranged the map storage cabinets  in rows and placed directly on the floor in the map room.

MAP STORAGE CABINETS ON MOVABLE AISLE

At the present time the library has mounted these map storage cabinets to a movable aisle, high density system. In essence this system is a series of movable platforms that roll together and compress into a solid block.  In short, eliminating aisle ways and saving space, allowing for more storage in a given area.  Then to access an individual cabinet you roll the platforms apart to create a single aisle way where needed. Ulrich Planfiles use much less space than flat drawer files to begin with (about 66% less). But when you use Ulrich Planfiles in conjunction with movable aisle, high density systems the space savings is tremendous.

In fact, Ulrich Planfiles really work well on these systems because you do not have to allow for space to open the drawers. Of course with the Planfile, you do all your filing from the top. Therefore the aisle only needs to be wide enough for the operator to comfortably work. Moreover there are no drawers to accidentally open as the platforms move.

ACTIVE MAP STORAGE COLLECTION

Of course the map collection at the University of Arizona is quite active. In fact, Hayri Yildririm, the Director of Library Facilities told us that many users access the maps on a regular basis. As can be seen combining Ulrich’s space saving design and the movable aisle, high density system creates a very efficient filing solution!

Jamestown Audubon

 audobon

Ulrich is the choice for storage of drawings, plans, posters and signs for the Jamestown Audubon Center and Sanctuary, in their important mission to connect people to the planet through educational experiences at the center and throughout the region.

Ulrich Planfiles

Above: Jeff Tome, Senior Naturalist at the Jamestown Audubon shows signs for the Audubon’s Enchanted Forest that takes place every Halloween. Children dress up and meet “animals” that live in the Forest. Volunteers dress as indigenous animals and teach children, in an entertaining way, about the animal’s role in the natural world. The signs for this wonderful event are kept safe and organized in an Ulrich Minifile.

Architectural & Engineering Drawings

The Audubon Center includes a 3-story nature center building contains a nature store, a small collection of live fish, reptiles and amphibians, and interactive displays. The building sits on a 600-acre wetland preserve which includes over five miles of beautifully maintained trails. All of the Architectural and Engineering Drawings are organized in an Ulrich Minifile. This was important when the Audubon recently performed a number of changes to update the centers lighting and conserve electrical energy, including the addition of Solar Panels. The ready accessibility of the Electrical Plans was important to this award winning project’s success.

Signs and Posters are stored in Minifile

Throughout the year the Audubon Center offers a wide variety of events for people of all ages. Each of these events requires signs for everything from event parking to signs for each of the activities:

“In the past we have had to reproduce our signs and posters each time we held an event. There was no central location to house the signs and no way to keep them from being damaged. We love our Ulrich Minifile Cabinet. We can organize our signs for each event in a folder. When it comes time for the event it takes seconds to retrieve last year’s signs and we are ready, and most important they are in the same or better condition than when we stored them last year.” Says Jeff Tome, Senior Naturalist.

We recommend you visit the Audubon center in Jamestown or find one in your area. It is a great place to enjoy nature with your family and friends.

Southwestern Elementary School in Lakewood, NY recently moved from a building that had housed the school for over 70 years to a new structure. The new lot is adjacent to the middle school and high school with greatly improved technology and facilities to house the K-5th graders that attend.

What first looked like a need to merely contain the prints that had been used in the most recent construction, quickly became an archival project.

Planfiles
Two Planfiles hold all of Southwestern’s current drawings with plenty of room for future projects

Prints were found that involved water, electrical, structural and heating, drawings spanning back decades and numerous elementary, middle and high school buildings for the Southwestern Central School district.

Ulrich Planfiling donated several Planfiles to aid the school district in organizing and maintaining historical documents that highlighted the school’s changes over many years of operation.

Two Planfiles hold all of Southwestern’s current drawings with plenty of room for future projects.

The drawings were organized and installed into the Planfiles by Ulrich employees, a project which was no small feat. The newest drawings are referenced frequently to maintain the current facility and make any necessary changes. The easy accessibility and organization makes such upkeep possible for the numerous contractors and laborers that work on the building.

At only 11 inches deep Ulrich Cadfile Cabinet stores active projects in any office area. Keeping important drawings close at hand.

Filing the same number of documents in flat file cabinets would have required six flat file sections. The flat file cabinets would have required twice the floor space and cost over 25% more than Ulrich.

At only 11 inches deep Ulrich Cadfile Cabinet stores active projects in any office area. Keeping important drawings close at hand.

While increased storage is a plus at the new Southwestern Elementary, floor space is readily available due to the space saving technology utilized by Ulrich’s vertical filing system. Lastly, for the newest and oldest drawings the cabinets provide fire and water resistance; therefore, keeping the documents intact for years to come.
