When fire protection was everything
If you had asked 50 years ago. The only focus would be fire resistance – hands down – no question. At that time very few buildings had fire prevention or fire safety features. If a fire started in your building someone called the fire department….. well they would if it was during business hours. If it was after business hours you hoped that your neighbors noticed the smoke and called the fire department. This often made reaction to a fire slow. Organization is the Cornerstone to Maximum Production

I once saw a bumper sticker that read, “Organized people are just too lazy to search for stuff.” While this is cute, it only scratches the surface of the benefits of organization. Being organized improves focus, makes you more productive and helps you achieve your goals. No doubt that things are done more quickly when the items you need are at your fingertips. Organization requires tools. These tools are usually simple and basic. These tools are a way to create a place for everything and have everything in it’s place. In our offices this means filing!

Filing – Tools of the Trade

Folders and labels are the basic – the very minimum of what is required for any efficient filing system. Imagine you being told that you must organize your office filing but you must do it without folders – no folders at all! You would think this is entirely crazy – a totally ridiculous task. Ulrich Planfiling has launched a new project to improve service to it’s Planfile as well as our custom sheet metal fabrication customers. President Dan Berry describes the changes, “Today’s current business environment is more complex than ever. Customers are ordering smaller production runs on a more frequent basis. Causing most businesses to have to process many more orders just to maintain the same volume of sales. Of course, this has put a strain on our business systems.”

Partnership for improved customer service

Custom sheet metal manufacturer, Ulrich is partnering with Insyte Consulting. Together they will analyze current business system requirements and map future system needs. This is a detailed analysis. Which will lead to the selection of a new state of the art computer system. This system will dramatically improve customer service and improve profitability.

There are two programs, each providing a portion of the funding for this project. Namely, Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand sponsor the first portion of the funding. In particular, this program supports small and medium-sized manufacturers in Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties. While this Manufacturing productivity improvement program provides technical assistance to businesses in manufacturing, process improvement and customized training.

In addition, NYS Senator Cathy Young secured funding for trans-formative investment programs in upstate NY as the second source of partial funding. Of course, funds from these programs will make many Southern Tier Manufacturers more competitive and create high paying jobs in the area.

Ulrich owners discuss small business concerns with Congressman Reed. — Congressman Reed meets with Ulrich owners

On May 28, 2015 Congressman Tom Reed hosted a Manufacturing summit. Bringing together manufacturing industry leaders, government agencies and trade representatives to promote a more successful manufacturing base in Western, NY.

Representing Ulrich Planifling was Eric Livengood, Director of Sales and Marketing and Dan Berry, President.

“I was impressed by the level of expertise of the presenters. They provided information that I hadn’t realized and am sure will be useful to manufacturers in developing new business” stated Dan Berry.

“It was a rewarding experience both personally and professionally.” said Eric Livengood, “I appreciate Tom Reed organizing the event. You could see the commitment Congressman Tom Reed (R-NY), Congressman Glen ‘GT’ Thomas (R-PA), and Congressman Chris Collins (R-NY) have to spend a day with manufacturers. The congressmen listened to our concerns and questions while filling us in on important legislative activity. The congressman also invited expert speakers to provided information key to exporting products outside of the US.”

Dan Berry stated in a letter of appreciation to Tom Reed, “My college career and all of my adult working life has been focused on being a successful manufacturer and I am very appreciative of the focus and attention you are bringing to this very important topic.”

These blueprints represent a complicated network that supplies more than 490,000 homes and businesses in New Hampshire with electricity. Some old flat file cabinets were still in service. A recent move to a new facility prompted PSNH to put all their large documents in Ulrich Cabinet.

Moving flat file storage cabinets can be risky for the blueprints. And let’s face it a whole lot of work! A key motivator for PSNH to ditch the last of their flat file cabinets and buy Ulrich was a recent move to a new building. As described below moving flat file, this is terribly time consuming as well as hazardous to important blueprints.

Easy Mobility is one of the design features of Ulrich Planfile. And the heavy duty casters make it easy to roll a fully loaded Planfile. These cabinets have a depth of 31 1/2″. Small enough to fit through standard interior doorways. Ulrich blueprint cabinets allowed PSNH to roll the cabinets, fully loaded with documents, out of the building and on to a truck, then roll the cabinets off of the truck, into position and are immediately ready for work – no packing or unpacking required! When has a move ever been so easy!

Flat File Storage Cabinets Make Moving Difficult and Time Consuming

If they were using flat file storage cabinets PSNH would have had to unload the drawings, pack them for transport and then disassemble the flat file cabinets. Because, movers must tip flat file cabinets on their side to bring them into or out of a room. Then they must carry the drawings and flat file cabinets separately from their old building to their new building – what are the chances they arrive together and without damage! After that they must reassemble the flat file cabinets. Finally, they would need to unpacked the documents and returned them to the proper drawers in the flat file cabinets. PSNH would have been unable to access their distribution line drawings and prints for days, even weeks. Not to mention the added labor cost.
